The Archbishop of Lima, Monsignor Carlos Castillo, has issued the ‘Edict of Introduction of the Cause of Beatification and Canonization of the Servant of God Luigi Bolla (1932-2013). A professed priest of the Society of Saint Francis de Sales (Salesians) who gave his life to the Achuar people on the Amazonian border between Peru and Ecuador.

After having received “the request to begin the process of Beatification and Canonization of the Servant of God Luigi Bolla, professed Priest of the Society of Saint Francis de Sales (Salesians)”, the Archbishop of Lima and Primate of Peru, Monsignor Carlos Castillo, has issued an Edict, dated August 12, 2021, in which it invites “the faithful to deliver to the Archbishopric of Lima the writings of the Servant of God that they eventually have with them and express to the same Ecclesiastical Authority what they may consider against the virtues and holiness of the Servant of God ”.

Provide useful information and documents

In this sense, the Archbishopric of Lima invites all the faithful to provide useful information and documents (letters, writings, etc.) regarding the cause, to present them to the Diocesan Tribunal of Lima. The Edict will be reported for two months in the Cathedral of Lima and will be communicated to the Apostolic Vicariate of Yurimaguas (Peru), the Apostolic Vicariate of Méndez (Ecuador), and the Diocese of Vicenza (Italy).

The joy of the Salesians and Amazonian settlers

After his Congregation, of which he always felt like one more despite, for years, living without being integrated into any religious community because of being at the service of his Achuar people, presented the introduction of the cause of beatification and canonization of this Servant of God, now from the Archbishopric of Lima this request has been approved and the respective process is opened.

Yánkuam ’Jintia, the name the Achuar people gave to the man who walked day and night with them for decades, is one step closer to beatification. It is about the well-known and remembered Father Luigi (Luis) Bolla, a Salesian missionary who evangelized and defended, enduring harsh living conditions, the Achuar brothers located on the border between Peru and Ecuador, several days’ travel from Yurimaguas, the city of closest reference, located in eastern Peru. “This news causes great joy not only among the members of the Society of San Francisco de Sales – reports REPAM – but also throughout the Vicariate of Yurimaguas and the Amazonian Church, since Father Luigi Bolla was a great missionary example who, with his unique and prolific life testimony, he inspires the new paths of the synodal Church, outgoing and intercultural that Pope Francis requests ”.
